Counsel

Counsel — invoice template, Office, law and finance. Fill it in in your browser: totals, discount, tax and balance due are worked out. Free.

What appears on the invoice

Switch a block off and it disappears from the document completely — no empty heading, no blank frame.

How to pay you

Nothing is switched on here, so nothing appears at the foot of the invoice.

Why this one is different
  • It calculates. Line totals are rounded before they are added, the way bookkeeping does it — so the figure on the invoice is the figure that lands in the bank, with no rounding drift between them.
  • It knows tax can be inside the price, not only added to it. Templates written for one country get this wrong and quietly overcharge or undercharge everyone else.
  • The discount comes off before the tax is worked out, because that is the order that is actually correct.
  • The arithmetic is checked against a separate, independently written model before this page ships — and against a deliberate attempt to break it.

Counsel

A navy half at the left, cream at the right, and two gold rules running the whole width across both — the seam between the fields is torn rather than cut, so the band reads as pressed paper rather than as a graphic. This is the most sober header of the fifty. A serif display face carries the title, the two names and the total; the table is ruled and unfilled; the balance due is an outlined frame rather than a coloured block.

Fees and disbursements on one bill — how should they sit?

Separate lines, disbursements named individually. Keep one tax treatment per document: if your disbursements are outside the scope of the tax on your fees, they belong on their own invoice rather than inside a single tax rate here.

Time recorded in six-minute units — will the quantity take that?

Quantities are decimal, so 2.4 hours at your hourly rate is exact. The line total is rounded to the penny before it joins the subtotal, not after.

When one invoice becomes a hundred

This page makes a document. The bookkeeping spreadsheet keeps the year: what you invoiced, what was paid, what is overdue, and what it all means at tax time — with the same verified arithmetic.

Questions people actually ask

Is anything I type sent to you?

No. The whole thing runs in your browser, including the logo. Your draft is kept in this browser's own storage so it survives a reload, and clearing it removes everything. We never see it and there is nothing to sign up for.

How do I get a PDF?

Press print and choose Save as PDF. Only the document prints — the editing panel disappears. Pick A4 or US Letter above so the margins are right for your country.

What is the difference between tax added to the prices and tax already in them?

If your prices exclude tax, the tax is added on top and the total goes up. If your prices already include it, the total does not change and the tax is separated out of it for the paperwork. Getting this backwards changes what your client owes, which is why it is a choice here rather than an assumption.

Can I issue a credit note?

Yes — put a negative quantity on the line you are reversing. The discount and the tax reverse with it, so a credit note and the invoice it cancels come to exactly zero together.

Why does the unit price allow four decimal places?

Because real prices have them: per litre, per kilometre, per unit. If a price is rounded to cents before being multiplied by a quantity, the line is wrong by more the larger the quantity gets.
