US federal poverty guidelines (FPL), 2026

What is the federal poverty level for 2026?

For 2026 the federal poverty guideline is $15,960 a year for a one-person household in the 48 contiguous states and DC, plus $5,680 for each additional person; Alaska and Hawaii have their own higher tables ($19,950 and $18,360 for one person). The figures took effect on January 13, 2026 under the HHS notice at 91 FR 1797 and apply until the 2027 update takes effect.

Where every figure comes from

One constant per table, held in a self-checking model. Each carries the primary document, its URL and the date it was actually read; the build re-derives sizes 2–8 from the size-1 figure plus the increment and refuses to publish on the first mismatch.

Percentages of the guideline (derived)

Assistance programs set cutoffs as multiples of the guideline. These tables are arithmetic computed from the primary rows above — not law: each program chooses its own multiple, its own rounding, a monthly or annual basis and its own adoption dates, so verify any cutoff against the program’s published rule.

One multiplier here is separately sourced rather than merely computed: 150% of the guideline is the discretionary-income line in the federal student-loan regulations, 34 CFR 685.209.

Guidelines, not thresholds

These are the HHS poverty guidelines — the administrative figures assistance programs use. The Census Bureau’s poverty thresholds are a different, statistical series used to count people in poverty. Both get called “the federal poverty level”, and mixing them up is the most common error in FPL tables found online.

What this does not cover

Read the limits before relying on the table:

  • The Census Bureau poverty THRESHOLDS — the statistical series used to count people in poverty. These are the HHS guidelines, the administrative figures.
  • Program eligibility of any kind. Programs pick a multiple, a rounding rule, a monthly or annual basis and an adoption date on their own; verify against the program’s published rule.
  • Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and other territories — HHS publishes no separate guidelines for them; which table a program uses there is the program’s own rule.
  • Prior years and the 2027 update. Guideline year 2026 only, from the notice cited above.
