How to compare job offers after commuting, childcare and relocation
A salary headline tells you what an employer offers, not what changes in your household. To compare jobs, use the same period and separate guaranteed cash from conditional value.
Start with pay you can explain
Use a known net-pay estimate or enter a gross amount with an explicit tax assumption. Do not silently assume tax is zero because the amount is missing. Keep a conditional bonus outside guaranteed income, and keep unsold shares outside money available for bills.
Subtract the costs caused by the job
Consider two simplified annual offers. Offer A pays $60,000 gross, with $12,000 of entered tax and $6,000 of work-related costs. It leaves $42,000 of net employment cash. Offer B pays $66,000, with $13,200 tax and $12,000 of work-related costs. It leaves $40,800.
The headline increase is $6,000, but the second offer leaves $1,200 less after the stated costs. This is an arithmetic example, not a tax calculation or a salary benchmark.
Include the time commitment
If Offer A takes 2,000 work hours and 250 travel hours, its net employment cash is about $18.67 per committed hour. If Offer B takes 2,500 hours, it produces $16.32. Use actual workdays and travel arrangements; do not count paid leave as hours worked.
Put relocation on a calendar
A moving bill may arrive before the first salary or bonus. Starting with $10,000, paying $6,000 to move leaves $4,000. Against a chosen $5,000 reserve, the shortfall is $1,000 even if the year ends positively.
Read repayment terms separately. A bonus received after withholding may have a gross repayment clause. An eventual tax adjustment is not necessarily cash available on the repayment date.
Keep benefits in the right place
A benefit that replaces a household bill can reduce that bill. Its advertised value is not an extra cash deposit. Retirement contributions and unsold equity can matter for wealth while remaining unavailable for today's spending.
