For guideline year 2026, 150% of the federal poverty guideline is $23,940 a year for one person and $49,500 for a household of four in the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia. In Alaska the same line for four is $61,875 and in Hawaii $56,925; each person beyond eight adds $8,520.

150% is where the federal student-loan rules draw discretionary income. The repayment regulations at 34 CFR 685.209 define it as adjusted gross income minus 150% of the poverty guideline for your family size and state, and every income-driven payment is built on that difference — which means the line in this table is where the payment starts counting.
Family size in those rules is the regulation’s own definition rather than the number of people in your home, and for a borrower filing separately only the dependants claimed on that return count. This is also the one multiple on this site that is separately sourced rather than merely computed; the others are our arithmetic on the published guideline.
