Most salon and barbershop templates do one of two things: they print a tidy price list, or they log the day’s takings. Both are useful and both stop early. Neither tells you whether a price actually clears what the service costs you once the chair time and the colour are counted, how many appointments a month you need before the rent and the insurance are paid, whether a given stylist earns you more on a chair rent or on a commission split, or how much you are quietly handing back in tips and commission each month. This kit is the whole operating system for a salon or barbershop, and it prices work the way a service is really priced — cost-plus on chair time, back-bar product and overhead, not as if you were selling a manufactured thing.
It does the money properly, and it names the two percentages correctly. On Services you set the chair time a service takes, your true hourly chair cost, the back-bar product it uses and a share of overhead, and the sheet gives you the real cost of one cut, colour, set of highlights or shave. Set a price and you see the margin as a share of the price and the markup as a share of the cost, side by side — the two are easy to confuse, and a "50% markup" is only a 33% margin. You also get the exact price for a target margin, and the break-even appointments per month at the price you actually charge: your monthly fixed costs divided by the profit each appointment contributes, so you know how much work covers the overhead before anything is yours.
The part most templates leave out is the deal you strike with a stylist. The Chair Rent vs Commission sheet takes one stylist at a time and shows what their chair earns you two ways — a fixed weekly chair rent, or a commission split where you keep the revenue and pay them a share — with the overhead handled fairly on both sides, so the comparison is honest. It tells you which is better at their current volume, and the exact monthly revenue where the two cross: below it a chair renter earns you more, above it commission does. That single number is the one that settles a conversation many owners have by guesswork.
And it keeps the day-to-day. A back-bar and retail stock room turns pack prices into a cost per unit and tracks what you hold, with a reorder point built from your own usage and supplier lead time that flags each item OK, REORDER or OUT OF STOCK — and, for anything you sell over the counter, the margin you make on it. The Appointments log records every visit with its revenue, COGS and profit, a tip column and the commission owed to the stylist worked out from their rate, and the Dashboard adds it all up: revenue, gross profit and margin, net after fixed costs and the tax to set aside, appointment count, break-even appointments, tips total, commission owed, stock to reorder and revenue by service. Built for Excel 2016+ and Google Sheets with classic, compatible formulas only — no macros, no add-ons, nothing locked. Any currency (one symbol cell), no tax rules baked in, so it works in any country. Sample data for a real salon is filled in so every number and the chart are alive on first open; clear the yellow cells and it is yours. Every headline figure in this listing was measured from the built file, recalculated by LibreOffice and checked against an independent model of the same arithmetic.
What you get
- Priced like a service, not a product: chair time × your hourly chair cost + back-bar product + a share of overhead → the true cost of an appointment (the cost-plus method a price-list template skips)
- Margin % and markup % side by side, the price for a target margin, and break-even appointments per month per service
- Chair rent vs commission, done honestly: what a stylist’s chair earns you each way, which wins at their volume, and the revenue where they cross
- An appointments log with revenue, COGS and profit per line, a tip column, and the commission owed to each stylist worked out from their rate
- 7 sheets: Start Here, Supplies & Retail, Services, Chair Rent vs Commission, Appointments, Dashboard, Checks
- A back-bar and retail stock room — colour, developer, foils, gloves, retail bottles: on-hand, stock value, reorder point, a REORDER / OUT OF STOCK flag, and the margin on what you sell
- A dashboard that adds it all up — revenue, gross profit and margin, net after fixed costs and tax, tips, commission owed, stock to reorder and revenue by service
- Overhead is counted once, done right: margins test the loaded cost, the month’s profit subtracts fixed costs separately — so it is not double-counted
- Any currency · no macros · nothing locked · instant download (.xlsx + PDF guide)
- Recalculated by LibreOffice and checked against an independent model — 0 errors

Questions
How is a salon service priced in this kit?
Cost-plus, the way a service is priced. On Services you set the chair time a service takes, your true hourly chair cost, the back-bar product it uses and a share of overhead. That gives the real cost of one appointment. You then set a price and the sheet shows the margin, the markup and the break-even appointments per month — so the price is a decision, not a guess.
What does the chair-rent-vs-commission sheet actually do?
It settles the deal you offer a stylist. For one stylist it shows your net two ways — a fixed weekly chair rent, or a commission split where you keep the revenue and pay them a share — with the overhead handled the same on both sides. It names which is better at their current volume, and the exact monthly revenue where the two cross: below it a chair renter earns you more, above it commission does.
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit as a share of the price; markup is profit as a share of the cost. A 50% markup is only a 33% margin. The Services sheet shows both, named correctly, so you never confuse them — and it gives the exact price you would charge to hit a target margin.
Does it track tips and commission?
Yes. Each appointment has a tip column and a commission-owed column that works out what you owe the stylist from their rate, and the Dashboard totals both for the month. They are tracked as cash you pay out, kept separate from the profit figure so the labour is never counted twice.
Does it handle products I sell to clients?
Yes — the Supplies & Retail sheet is a back-bar and retail stock room in one. Back-bar items track cost per unit, on-hand and a reorder flag; for a retail bottle you also enter its shelf price and see the margin you make on it.
Does it work in Google Sheets?
Yes. Upload the .xlsx to Google Drive and choose File → Save as Google Sheets. Every formula (SUMIFS, VLOOKUP, COUNTIF, IFERROR) and the chart are Sheets-compatible. A short PDF walks you through it.
Which currency does it use?
Any. You set a currency symbol on Start Here; it is decorative only — the arithmetic uses plain numbers, so the file works in any country with no tax rules baked in.
Is it only for hair salons?
No. Add, rename or remove services freely — a barbershop’s cuts, beard trims and shaves, or a salon’s colour, highlights and blow-dries, or a booth renter’s own menu. The same cost-plus structure and the chair-rent comparison fit a shop of any size.
