A stock plan begins with two different questions: what demand might occur, and what buffer you are willing to finance if reality differs. Demand Forecast & Safety Stock Lab keeps those questions apart and connected — the forecast, its historical test and the buffer economics sit side by side for every product and location. It is built for retail, distribution and production teams in businesses.

For retail, distribution and production teams: review a few products or a larger catalogue across locations. Import your sales history and distinguish genuine zero demand from periods when the product was unavailable. A week that sold out is a gap, not zero sales; a missing date is a missing period, not a zero — and lost demand is never reconstructed silently.

Choose with evidence: compare eligible methods on the same rolling historical test. Inspect absolute error, bias and the number of observations instead of accepting a forecast because its line looks smooth. Each test forecast is fitted only on the history before its period, and a method is ranked only when it can be used at every test period. The tool explains when history is too short for a method — and labels a manual choice as manual.

Plan the buffer: enter delivery-time assumptions, review interval and unit cost. See the target-stock gap and the capital tied up in the safety buffer, with a ladder of 90%, 95%, 97.5% and 99% cycle-service targets. A cycle-service estimate is labelled as a model approximation, not a promise that stockouts cannot happen.

Keep uncertainty visible: historical residual ranges are separate from the point forecast. Missing history, intermittency and seasonal changes remain visible. The tool does not silently treat unavailable stock as zero customer demand.

Worked example from the fictional demo: a filter sells a mean of 10 units a week with a standard deviation of 2; the lead time is 3 weeks with a standard deviation of 1 and stock is reviewed continuously. The variance over the protection period is 3 × 2² + 10² × 1² = 112, so σ ≈ 10.58. At a 95% cycle-service target the whole-unit safety buffer is 18 and, with a flat forecast of 10 a week, the target stock is 30 + 17.4 → 48. With 20 on hand, 10 on order and 5 backordered, the inventory position is 25 and the gap to target is 23 units. At $4 a unit the buffer alone ties up $72.

For medium-sized catalogues the same engine runs every product and location in one calculation — in a background worker for large histories, so the page stays usable. Filter by location, department or result, see which method each product received, and compare buffer capital per currency. Currencies are never added together without an exchange rate you enter. No AI guesses: only the documented statistical methods are used, and every result shows its working.

Try the two fixed fictional demos — a small shop with 12 products and a distributor with 240 products across 4 locations and 104 weeks — then buy once for the full online tool and the offline file, or open it with an active PRO subscription.

What you get

  • Sales history import (CSV/XLSX, up to 50 MiB per file, 500,000 observations in total): every error and duplicate listed with its line before anything is saved; duplicates are blocked, never summed.
  • Real zeros kept apart from stockouts, unknown availability, open periods and missing dates — gaps stay gaps on the chart and in every calculation.
  • Documented methods only: last value, moving average 4/8/13, exponential smoothing α 0.1–0.9, seasonal repeat (7 days / 52 weeks) and Croston-SBA for intermittent demand.
  • Rolling-origin backtest without look-ahead: MAE, RMSE, bias and WAPE on the same past periods; WAPE shown as unavailable when actual demand is zero.
  • Historical one-step error range (q10–q90) drawn only with at least 8 test errors and labelled as what it is — not a calibrated multi-step probability.
  • Safety buffer from explicit assumptions you confirm: lead time and its spread (days or periods), review interval, cycle-service target, on hand, on order, backorders and an optional unit step for divisible products.
  • Cycle-service ladder with buffer, target stock, gap to target and capital in the buffer; exact money in each product's currency (JPY without cents, KWD with three decimals).
  • All products view for medium-sized catalogues: up to 1,000 products and 25 locations, filters by location, department and result, totals per currency and in your base currency only with your own exchange rates.
  • Forecast CSV, backtest CSV per test period, buffer CSV with every assumption, printable product and catalogue reports, complete backups — in 8 languages.

How it works

  1. Set the period and import history. Days or weeks (with the first day of the week), then your products and sales history — sold-out periods marked as stockouts.
  2. Check data quality. Complete periods, real zeros, stockouts, unknown, open and missing periods for every product and location.
  3. Compare methods on the past. One-step test on the same past periods; the lowest error wins, and every reason a method is not eligible is shown.
  4. Size and price the buffer. Confirm the assumptions, read the cycle-service ladder, the gap to target and the capital tied up — then export or print.

Limits

No forecast guarantees future sales. Buffer calculations depend on stated assumptions and are not fill-rate guarantees. Purchase-pack, MOQ and purchasing-budget decisions belong in Stock Purchase Planner. This tool does not place orders or connect live to your shop. Returns are not imported as negative demand, and lost demand during a stockout is not reconstructed. Decision support for your own business, not financial advice.

Questions

Does it use AI?

No; the documented models are statistical: last value, moving averages, exponential smoothing, a seasonal repeat and Croston-SBA. Every result shows the method, the test and the numbers behind it.

Can it forecast a new product with no history?

It reports insufficient data rather than inventing a result. With a few complete periods you can choose a simple method manually; it is labelled as untested until there is enough history for a fair test.

Does a 95% setting mean 95% of units are filled?

No, it is an approximate cycle-service target: the share of replenishment cycles expected to end without a stockout under the stated assumptions. It is not a fill rate and not a guarantee.

How are sold-out weeks handled?

A period marked as a stockout, with unknown availability or still open is a gap in the history, never zero demand. Only a period where the product was available and the period is closed counts as a real zero.

Why did the tool pick a simple method?

Each method is tested on the same past periods, one step ahead, using only earlier data. The lowest mean absolute error wins; ties go to the lower RMSE and then a fixed order. A simple method often wins on stable demand.

Does it create purchase orders?

No. The gap to target is the quantity to reach the target stock before packs, minimum order quantities or budget. Those decisions belong in Stock Purchase Planner.

Are exports included in PRO?

Yes; the offline program is separate. Active PRO Week, Month and Year subscribers can use the full online tool, its reports, CSV exports and backups.

What is included in a one-time purchase?

The full online tool, the self-contained offline package, a guide, templates and your own reports and backups, under the licence shown at checkout.

What happens if PRO ends?

You can still view and back up your existing local records. Creating or editing calculations requires renewed PRO or a one-time purchase. A separate one-time purchase remains valid independently of PRO.

Where are my records stored?

The calculation workspace stores records in your browser on this device. Save regular backups. Clearing browser storage can remove local records. Account and purchase records are handled separately by the website.

Can I use several currencies?

Yes. Each product has its own currency; capital is totalled per currency, and a total in your base currency appears only when you enter an exchange rate, its date and source for every other currency.

Does the demo accept my data?

No. The demo uses fictional examples and lets you inspect the workflow, every screen and sample reports. Your own inputs and imports are available in the full version.

Business license for use in your own business. No resale or redistribution. Opens in your browser right after payment, on phone and computer. Your figures stay on your device. No physical item.
